At the top toolbar, select Tools, then Preferences:

Under the option, "Folders included in My Library," deselect all options ("Share Folders, "Sub-Folders" and "Monitor Cha..."). Do not add any folders unless the content therein does not contain malware, spyware, or content that would violate intellectual property, trademark, or other applicable laws. Note also that uploading files may also expose sensitive information about your location, identity, and personal documents or data.

Also, ensure that your shared folder is a separate, unique folder that does not share data or documents with folders or directories on your hard drive that have sensitive documents that you do not wish to share with the BearShare network:

Associating file types (extensions) with BearShare may share or expose files with the BearShare network. It is not advisable to associate media with BearShare. In order to not associate file types with BearShare, select the "Unselect All" button:

Enter values of "0" (zero) for "Allow up to ___ "Uploads Simultaneously" and "Maximum bandwidth for Uploads (in Kb/s):"

BearShare will scan your system to find media files and documents to share with its network. When this window pops up, do NOT select the files and add them to the network. In addition to potentially violating intellectual property and/or trademark laws, uploading files may also expose sensitive information about your location, identity, and personal documents or data.

BearShare will prompt you to create an identity to use with its network. If you choose this option, select a nickname that does not divulge information pertaining to your identity. Providing your e-mail address may also expose portions of your identity.

BearShare also prompts you to provide further information. Bear in mind that some information, particularly a photograph or "about me," may expose your identity.
